Men's Ministry in the Church
Eric Geiger, writing for thomrainer.com, recently penned the following regarding men’s ministry:
"Fire is an amazing thing, isn’t it? It can be incredibly helpful—warming your home, cooking your dinner, and when focused, can even cut through steel. Men are similar to fire. Men can either warm families, churches, and communities or they can burn them to the ground. That’s why every church must minister to men in an intentional and strategic way." We need our ministry to men to be biblical, teaching men how God instructs them to live and lead in their families. Study after study shows that if you can reach a husband and/or father, then you will reach the entire family. The story of the conversion of the Philippian jailer points to this fact, as his entire family believed in Jesus after his conversion (Acts 16:25-40).
What are you doing to reach men in and through your church? Do you have a growing men’s ministry where men are discipling and b
eing discipled? Are you as a pastor, leader, or church member invested to reaching the men of our community with the gospel of Jesus, so that they might lead their families to faith in Jesus?
If you are not sure where to begin in starting a men’s ministry, let me offer a suggestion. This month, on August 18-19, Beulah Baptist Church is hosting the West GA Men’s Conference. Five years ago, while pastoring at New Canaan, I brought our first group of men. There were only three of us from the church that attended that year. Each year since, we increased the number who attended, with 20 men attending last year! As a result of those conferences, I had men coming to me wanting to reach others. I had fathers coming to me asking for help with accountability to intentionally disciple their teenage sons. Men came to men confessing their lack of investment in worship and in being the spiritual leader of their families. Discipleship groups were started and are now multiplying as a result. This conference helped kick-start men’s ministry at New Canaan.
If you don’t have a men’s ministry, please consider taking men from your church to this weekend. And if you have unsaved men in your life, invite them to come. Tony Nolan is one of the speakers, and will share the gospel in a mighty way. You can register by visiting www.insidebbc.com. You men will be blessed. Your church will be encouraged. I look forward to seeing you there!
